#ImAMason

Brothers:  California Grand Lodge has sent out a communication that we’re sharing here:

I’m writing to you with a message about an exciting new social media campaign that the Grand Lodge is launching this month, called #ImAMason. The details of the plan are listed below, but first I want to give you a bit of background:

We know from extensive surveys and conversations that, by far, the most common way our members are introduced to the fraternity is through another Mason. Often, that’s a parent or grandparent. But it also happens through conversations with friends and colleagues.

And yet, most of us don’t talk much about Freemasonry with those around us!

I want to change that. Freemasonry is an important part of my life—and I know it’s an important part of so many of yours. It’s something I want our members to share with the people around them. That’s how we’ll continue to build pride in our craft, bring more brothers into the fold, and drive this tradition into the future.

#ImAMason is one way to do that. Here’s how it works:

Part I

Between JULY 1–14, we’re asking all members who are comfortable doing so to post a short message on Facebook or Instagram saying why Freemasonry is important to you. By including the hashtag #ImAMason we’ll be able to compile these posts and share them even more widely. This can be a written post or filmed as a video— whatever you prefer.

Here’s an example of what that might look like:

Part II

In addition, we’re asking anyone who’s comfortable doing so to temporarily change their profile picture to the handsome “I’m a Mason” button at the top of this email. (To download it, right-click the button and save. Alternatively, click here to download it.) We’re asking members to change their profile picture for the length of the campaign, from July 1–14. Then you can change it back. Here are some easy instructions for temporarily changing your profile picture.

In Conclusion

I know many Masons think of their membership in the fraternity as a private matter. That’s fine, but it isn’t a rule. If you aren’t comfortable participating in this campaign, there’s no pressure to do so. However, Freemasonry is not a secret organization. It’s only by telling those around us about who we are, what we do, and what our craft means in the lives of our members that we can carry the tradition forward. This is part of how we’ll achieve our vision of A World in Harmony.

If you need any help answering questions about Freemasonry, I urge you to take a look at the new booklet, OPENING THE DOOR, that our Grand Lodge recently produced. It has lots of short and helpful answers to common questions. You can also check out or send prospects to our new webpage, WHAT IS FREEMASONRY, to get more basic information.

Please help us get our message out by participating in this fun and exciting social media campaign. I’d love to see posts from all around the world detailing the role of Freemasonry in its members’ lives. Maybe it’ll even go viral! I’m certainly proud of everything we’ve done together and will do in the future. And I’m proud that #ImAMason.
